Lenten Verses for the King

full-cruci
Crucifixion by Jonathan Mayer

As it is the season of Lent during which we reflect on what it took for our Savior-God to bear our sins and suffer our sentence, here is a poem based on Psalm 22 which Jesus quoted as he was dying for our sins on his cross.

May God bless your reflection and worship as we celebrate our Savior’s suffering, death and victorious resurrection again and ponder its meaning and blessings for our life and our future!
(Note: For further meditation as you read the poem you may want to read Psalm 22 and the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ suffering and death. The poem can also be sung to the tune of “Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted” CW #127)

Words of woe so long recorded, now they echo from his lips,
Hear your Savior voice his anguish as his holy life-blood drips,
“O my God, My Holy God, Oh why have you forsaken me?”
David’s words now find fulfillment in the black of Calvary.

Hush and stillness, bitter silence as no voice from heaven heard,
Now no “This my Son–beloved,” from the Father not a word.
Many sinners through the ages called in faith and they were saved
But for ever-faithful Jesus, God withheld the love he craved.

Like a worm and not a human, mocked and scorned by all who see
Hangs the only one who gave God life-long perfect loyalty
Hear them jeer him in his anguish–spitting words of hateful spite:

Mighty bulls have circled ’round him, roaring lions rip their prey.
His strong life is drained like water; his pure heart now melts away.
O my Jesus! O my Jesus! How you thirst in Hell’s full heat!
Evil people all around you–pierced your hands and pierced your feet.

See his bones stretched out in public; stripped of every dignity
Holy horror, Mighty Victim–his defeat is victory!
God made him who had no sin to be the sin for you and me.
Christ our Savior took our curse and our eternal penalty!

Yet he trusts his Father fully even hanging on that cross.
Hear him pray in full submission as he’s sacrificed for us:
“O my Father in your hands I fully place my precious soul.”
God has heard and not despised him: Jesus’ suff’ring reached its goal.

Listen to your Brother, Jesus, as he shouts triumphantly,
“It is finished!” Sins are paid for–all are gone eternally.

My name is Adam Nitz. I was trained as a Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) Pastor and was privileged to serve a congregation in Michigan for three years. After much wrestling in prayer and evaluating personal and family considerations I resigned my call. Part of the new direction my life has taken includes creative writing. I’ve always loved to write. Growing up I filled notebooks with poetry and reflections on life, faith, people and God. I just recently published a novel. I took a real person mentioned briefly in the Bible and imagined what his life's journey may have been like. If you’d like to follow my journey as an author feel free to check out my other blog at www.adamnitz.com. Please check out my book: I Was There When the Giant Fell at www.createspace.com/4761654 or search the title on Amazon.com. I pray that God will use all these writings to bring more people into closer contact with his saving truth--his mighty Word and that hearts and lives are changed by God’s boundless message of grace.
