Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Terrible Fathers

The end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie leaves us with a mystery. Who is Peter Quill’s father? After the Guardians defeated Ronan, the Nova Corps discovers that Peter’s father is not from earth. This new discovery explains how Peter was able to hold an infinity stone during the final battle. His father is from an ancient alien species. Earlier in the movie it was revealed that Peter’s father had abandoned Peter and his mother when Peter was very young. At the end of the movie we are left wondering what kind of alien his father will turn out to be.

The sequel deals with the question of Peter’s father. Peter’s father shows up quite early in the movie. Ego the living planet is Peter’s father. Ego is a god-like being called a Celestial. At first Peter is happy to learn about his true father. He is certainly upset that he had been abandoned for so long but he wants to establish a relationship. However, it eventually becomes known that Ego doesn’t really care about Peter at all. Ego had been traveling the Universe and impregnating many women on many planets. He was hoping that one day he would have a son or daughter who would share some of his Celestial power. Ego wants to use the power of his offspring to help him transform thousands of planets into extensions of himself. Peter was the only one who had the power that Ego needed. Ego suspected this to be true when Peter had held an infinity stone. Ego had killed his other offspring when they didn’t have the power he wanted.

When Peter and the Guardians of the Galaxy discovered this plot by Ego, they set out to stop him. One of the people who helps them is Yondu. Years ago, Ego had hired Yondu to retrieve Peter from Earth. When Yondu discovered Ego’s evil plan, he didn’t deliver Peter to Ego. Yondu raised Peter and became a father figure to Peter. Yondu was a harsh father figure but over time he developed a caring heart for Peter. At times he would tell Peter that the rest of his alien crew wanted to eat Peter but Yondu was stopping them. This was a running joke to Yondu but it absolutely terrified Peter. Eventually, when the Guardians are working to defeat Ego, Yondu shows his love for Peter. Referring to Ego, Yondu says, “He may be your father, boy, but he ain’t your daddy!” The truth of the matter is that Yondu was a better father figure even though he wasn’t the biological father. In spite of his harsh treatment, he cared about Peter.

These two father figures make me think of fathers in our world and also our Heavenly Father. Sometimes we see good examples of fathers. We see dads who care for their children deeply and spend lots of time encouraging them. There can also be some terrible examples of fathers. There are men who abandon their families and want nothing to do with their children. Regardless of how good or bad a father is, all earthly fathers are sinners. Even if we have a great earthly father, we still will notice times that they sin. They will not always say the right thing and they will not always do the right thing. They need a Savior just as much as we do.

Hopefully we have good fathers in our lives that can help us appreciate the fact that God is our Heavenly Father. If we have bad fathers, it might be hard to picture God as a Father who loves us. The truth of Scripture is that God is our Father and he wants to show us his love through Jesus. It is a great blessing that God is our perfectly loving Father. 1 John 3:1 says, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” Our Heavenly Father is always looking out for our good. He did everything necessary to save us from our sins. He sacrificed his own son so that we would have forgiveness for all of our sins. God has prepared a place in heaven for those who believe in him.

Both Peter’s biological father and his father figure had their failings. Ego only wanted to use Peter and didn’t love him. Yondu cared for Peter but he had been harsh and didn’t show his love very much. As Christians we have the best possible father. Our earthly fathers are fallible human beings. Our Heavenly Father is completely loving toward us. He sent his save to save us from sin and he wants us to live with him for all eternity.
