The Last Judgment

The Last Judgment is part of a diptych (two paintings telling one story). It was created by Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck with areas later completed by unidentified followers of his workshop. The Last Judgment and its accompanying depiction of The Crucifixion are renowned for its complex and highly detailed artwork.

About the artwork

The right panel of the diptych depicts the Last Judgment as Christ is seated on his throne. He is in his glory. The artist represents the wounds of Jesus’ glory with gold around his hands, feet and head. The angels bring the instruments of death, which brought Jesus’ greatest glory – the cross, crown of thorns, nails, spear and sponge.

Mary and John the Baptist kneel in adoration to Jesus’ left and right. A choir of angels are below Jesus, singing his praises. Other angels are blowing their trumpets to coronate the Christ. Kings and commoners intermingle as they stream to worship the King.

At the bottom of the painting, St. Michael the Archangel raises his sword in battle. Behind him, the resurrected rise from their graves in front of a burning city. Death is personified as a skeleton extending its macabre wings over the damned.

The imagery that Jan van Eyck depicts in The Last Judgment is at the same time both illuminating and excruciating. It creates joy as our eyes look to heaven and terror as our eyes drift to hell.

As Christians who believe in the crucified, resurrected, ascended and reigning Christ Jesus, we are not afraid of Judgment Day. That’s because The Last Judgment is based on The Crucifixion.

Your judgment

You received your judgment already when God’s Son died on Calvary’s cross.

You received your judgment already when the crucified Christ broke free from death’s grip on Easter morning.

You received your judgment already when the pastor poured God’s water and Word over your head at the baptismal font.

You receive your judgment of innocence at church when you hear God’s words of absolution: “I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

You receive evidence of your judgment on your lips when you taste God’s forgiveness in the Lord’s Supper.

Lift your eyes out of hell and lift them up to the Lord Jesus. You have no reason to panic. You have every reason to be at peace. You are justified in Jesus at the Last Judgment.

For the first 8 years of my ministry, I served at Faith Lutheran Church, an exploratory congregation in Radcliff, KY. I presently serve at Epiphany Lutheran Church and Wisconsin Lutheran School (WLS) in Racine, WI. I am also very involved with our youth as the WLS head soccer coach and the head counselor for WELS Training Camp, a youth camp for 3rd – 9th graders. I have been married to Shelley for 20 years. Together we have 4 beautiful daughters – Abigail, Miriam, Lydia and Gabrielle. We also have 2 dogs – Messi and Mia – named after Lionel Messi and Mia Hamm (the Zarling family really likes soccer!)
