Before Sonrise

What happened that first Easter morning? Looking back at those events from here, we all know why Easter is so special. We all know what happened that morning. We say it over and over in our worship services:

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

We associate Easter with joyful singing and praise. And well we should! But on that very first Easter. . . what was it really like? The quiet tomb. The waiting for dawn. The mixed emotions of fear, uncertainty, and sorrow soon replaced by joy and hope.

One of the accounts read on Easter is that of Mary Magdalene crying at the tomb of the Savior.

Why is Mary crying? Well, we know the story of Easter and how there was a great confusion amongst the early Christians as they wondered what was happening. Jesus was buried, but then his body’s missing. And then there’s these angels that are speaking. And it’s just so exciting to read the accounts and to imagine what it was like to be there.

And so in the piece “Before Sonrise,” I created a voice-over [of the account of Mary Magdalene at the tomb] . . . And I think the voice-over makes it more accessible.
